Friendship – Dostuk
The shyrdak is made of natural felt using the traditional cut-and-insert technique and is carefully stitched by hand. The blue and red patterns symbolize friendship, depicting four girls standing side by side and talking to each other. The red patterns inside the blue are called “kochkor muyuz”, meaning ram’s horn. Ram’s horn occupies a dominant place in Kyrgyz ornamental art. A characteristic feature of this pattern is its spiral structure, consisting of two to three semicircles forming a spiral. In composition, the pattern is often enriched by introducing other forms of Kyrgyz ornamentation. The Ram’s horn is a symbol of bravery and prosperity.
The black and white triangles represent “tumarcha”, meaning amulet. Tumarcha is used to protect against evil. Inside the amulet is the “kӧӧkӧr” — an ancient artifact of nomadic people, used for storing kymyz, ayran, or water. The depiction of the kӧӧkӧr in decorative patterns on various objects is understood as a symbol of abundance and prosperity.
Along the edges are mountain patterns in black and white, symbolizing the coexistence of black and white, good and evil. These patterns also represent waves, the paths of people, and the paths of animals.
